Or rather -
what’s old is new again. Stand up paddling (SUP) began in the 1960s in
Waikiki; the story is that beach boys would use long boards and
outrigger canoe paddles to get through the breaks quickly, and they
would then stand up and take photographs of the tourist who were
learning to surf. In early 2000 some of the big wave surfers began
using long boards and elongated canoe paddles for training during
periods of flat surf. Since the early 2000s stand up paddling has grown
rapidly in popularity. It doesn’t matter if you are on a river in
Wisconsin, a lake in Georgia, or on a beach on Maui, you may very well
see someone “SUPing”. The awesome thing about stand up
paddling is that you can do it right away!! You don’t have to be an
expert. It doesn’t matter that you’ve never been on a board, you can
experience instant success. SUPing allows you to enjoy being on the
water from an entirely different perspective; you can see farther onto
the horizon, and deeper and more clearly into the water. If you are
interested in fitness, it is a great outdoor workout which isn’t gear
intensive. All you need is the board, a paddle, and a body of water. It
doesn’t get any purer than that. Hurricane Kayaks has paddled onto the SUP
wave with the introduction of Hurricane Boards. Hurricane Boards are
made from the same lightweight durable Trylon (ABS) as our Hurricane
Kayaks; a solid foam core is used to create rigidity, and structural
integrity; and then the top deck and bottom are permanently fused
together. Our boards are designed for the surf and flat-water paddling.
Our primary objective is to deliver the performance and aesthetics of
an expensive composite board at a price point that is much lower and
more accessible to beginner SUP paddlers. Contact your local Hurricane
Kayaks dealer, or the nearest surf shop to see the Hurricane Boards
SUP.
